The Missing Factor – Sittin’ With My Sis

On this episode of “The Missing Factor,” Drew talks with his sister Michelle.

When Drew was first diagnosed his family wasn’t exactly sure what it meant for Drew to have hemophilia.  Michelle explains her experiences with Drew as he was growing up with hemophilia in the video. “Our parents really made it so we were hesitant doing a lot of things with you – even playing – for fear, caution of bleeds,” says Michelle. “I do remember one time when you were teething and in the middle of the night we went into your room and your pillow was covered in blood, your face and hair….the sight was horrific. This went on every time you lost a tooth.”

“When I was little my sister was carrying me, she tripped, and went to grab my head and missed and split my head.” says Drew.  Michelle definitely reminisced about that being a scary moment among a few other happenings which is natural with any child or sibling, especially one with a bleeding disorder.

They also talk about hemophilia carriers towards the end of the video and family support which is important.

“The parents need support as well. Make sure you get involved in any groups, organizations or nonprofits that you can because you need that support and need to know the latest and greatest medicines that are out there.  The new treatment systems that are out there and that’s the only real way to stay connected and involved,” says Michelle.

Thank you both for your time and sharing your experiences in this new episode of “The Missing Factor.”

Drew Kochera is a severe hemophilia who has been doing video blogs for nearly 8 years about his life. He started going through a number of surgeries a few years ago and took a break from blogging. He recently began recording videos again and has been posting them to his YouTube Channel and Facebook page (The Missing Factor). We reached out to Drew back in February of this past year and are excited that he decided to let us distribute his blog. We share Drew’s goal of providing a resource where you can learn about bleeding (and clotting) disorders, the latest happenings, and a sense of community. We hope you enjoy Drew’s sense of humor, honesty, and knowledge of hemophilia as much as we do. Thanks again Drew – we can’t wait for the next episode.
