New Procedure Could Benefit West Virginia Bleeding Disorder Patients

December 3, 2013; Posted by: webleed staff

Weirton, West Virginia bleeding disorder residents could benefit from new knee replacement procedure.

Residents in West Virginia who had second thoughts in the past about getting a knee replacement may take another look at the procedure. After a four-year development period by Weirton natives Dr. Jorge Roig, anesthesiologist at Weirton Medical Center (WMC), and registered nurse Julie Mazur, WMC is unveiling what it refers to as “the new knee replacement.”

Bleeding disorder patients are prime candidates for hip and knee replacements due to bleeding in their joints.  WMC has a detailed plan for blood management with their new procedure. The progressive, individualized approach to blood loss minimizes the need for a transfusion.  Therefore, the amount of blood or medication needed during this procedure can also be minimized.

Always interesting when healthcare providers find new, more efficient ways to go about surgeries.  To read more about how this hospital is ‘setting the bar’ for knee replacements, click here to view the whole Weirton Daily Times article.
