Local Nevada Indian Health Services looking into possible outbreak among members of the reservation.

Interesting story today out of Nevada regarding HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C.  Local Nevada television station NBC-mynews4  is reporting that upwards of 20 people been potentially exposed to HIV, and Hepatitis B and C, after a blood glucose pen was reused and not properly sterilized between patients.

Tribe Chairman, Tildon Smart says he is one of the tribe members who was affected while getting his blood glucose checked at the NuNu Diabetes Wellness Clinic through Indian Health Services. According to Smart, there was no proof that the needle was reused, and the pen was only wiped down between patients.

HIV and hepatitis can be passed on to other people.  Sharing needles to inject drugs or steroids, sharing of needles for tattoos, piercings, and body art can also lead to infection. Someone with HIV or hepatitis who shares a needle also shares the virus, which lives in the tiny amounts of blood attached to the needle. Sharing needles also can pass hepatitis and other serious infections to another person.
