HOSPITAL NETWORK HACKED – 4.5 million patients affected

August 18th, 2014; posted by: WeBleed Staff

Community Health Systems, based in Franklin, Tennessee (publicly traded on the NYSE as CYH) announced today that its network of 206 hospitals across 29 US states had been hacked.

The digital break gave hackers names, Social Security numbers, physical addresses, birthdays and telephone numbers on 4.5 million patients.  If you received treatment from a network-owned hospital OR were simply referred there by an outside doctor at any time within the last 5 years your information was stolen.

Community Health Systems claimed in the regulatory filing that investigators believe that a Chinese group of hackers is behind the attack.  The filing also said that credit card numbers, medical/clinical information were not included.

The hospital network says that it has since removed the malware from its systems and completed other remediation steps.  It is now notifying patients as required by law.

The FBI is investigating.  Read more from Reuters.
