England – Hemophiliac Cycler Sets Record, Wins Event

British road racing cyclist Alex Dowsett sets new time record.

Cool article from Cycling Weekly today out of the United Kingdom. Hemophiliac road racing cyclist Alex Dowsett recently set a new British 10 mile time trial record in Cambridgeshire, a county in England.  The new record of 17 minutes and 20 seconds bests Michael Hutchinson’s 2012 record by 25 seconds. He won the event by over 2 minutes.

When Dowsett spoke on ITV’s Cycle Show in July 2013, he cited hemophilia as being a key factor choosing competitive cycling in his youth because contact games such as football and rugby were considered too risky for him to participate in.

It’s been quite a nice few years for Dowsett on the cycling circuit. He signed with the Spanish Movistar Team for the 2013 season and after competing in the Classics season for them, Dowsett was selected to ride the Giro d’Italia for his first Grand Tour appearance. Success quickly followed as Dowsett helped his team take second place on stage two and on stage eight Dowsett set the fastest time to record his biggest career victory to date, setting a time ten seconds faster than the second placed finisher. In June of 2013, Dowsett won the British National Time Trial Championships for the third year in a row despite crashing early on in the course.

Although he has hemophilia, Dowsett has not let that hold him back from accomplishing his goals and has served as an excellent role model for the bleeding disorders community around the world.
