Azerbaijan to set up more hematology clinics for those suffering from thalassemia and hemophilia.
A country in Eastern Europe, Azerbaijan, will now offer additional aid to those suffering from hemophilia and thalassemia. According to the Head of the Republican Association of Hemophiliacs, Gulnara Huseynova, patients will not have to travel to far reaching areas of the country for their medical care. In every region of the country one hematologist and one nurse will be available for hematology aid and have already began taking their training courses. The medical staff will work in the central hospitals of regions and cities.
A few blood disorders stats (AzerNews) from the country include:
- 1,500 hemophiliacs in Azerbaijan
- 350 people are children under the age of 18 and 700 patients aged 18-40 years – Fifty percent of patients are children of preschool and school age.
- Children with thalassemia need blood transfusions 1-2 times in a month.
- About 10-15 years ago the treatment of thalassemia was conducted inefficiently.
Currently the Health Ministry buys drugs for the treatment of thalassemia, including special drugs, leukocyte filters, which are distributed to medical institutions. The Ministry also carries out several actions on blood donation. Similar centers are expected to be established the majority of high populated regions in the country.
