TAKE A TRIP – BUFFALO

Don’t let your bleeding or clotting disorder keep you from experiencing the joys of travel. While precautions and preparations need to be taken for anyone with a chronic health problem – you can still get out there and see all the world has offer. Our “Take a Trip” Series aims to highlight places near and far that you may want to visit. We’ll provide you with local information, ideas for joint-friendly things to do, and access to resources so you can enjoy your time away from home.

Buffalo, New York, USA – Whether you’re in to history, nature, architecture, shopping, or consider yourself a foodie…Buffalo has something for everyone (Unless you’re a hockey fan – sorry Sabre’s fans…your team is a woeful 6-20-2 right now).

TOP 5 TRIP TO DOS

#1.) Visit Niagara Falls (from the Canadian side) – just a little over a half an hour away from Buffalo, by way of the “Rainbow Bridge” you’ll be able to pull over at any number of roadside parks for viewing of the American, Bridal Veil, and Canadian Horseshoe Falls.  The view is better from Canada – take our word for it.  The falls are lit every night, so even if you arrive after sundown you’ll still get to behold this awesome sight.  Visiting in the winter months?  Don’t worry the falls haven’t completely frozen over in more than 150 years.

Need a break from all the water?  We suggest a round of pool and a platter of Poutine (Fries, Gravy, and Cheese Curds – need we say more) from Yanks Old Niagara Bar and Grill OR a pizza Pie from Antica’s Pizzeria – we had the best pizza with artichoke hearts here.

PASSPORT REQUIRED for US Citizens crossing into Canada.

#2.)  Take an Architectural Tour of “America’s Best Designed City” – Get ready to experience multiple works by Frank Lloyd Wright including the Martin House Complex, (the finest example of his Prairie Style), and Graycliff, his most important summer estate, Louis Sullivan’s ornate Guaranty Building, H.H. Richardson’s massive Buffalo State Hospital, the graceful lines of Eliel and Eero Saarinen’s Kleinhans Music Hall, a system of parks and parkways by Frederick Law Olmsted, and the birthplace of the American Arts & Crafts Movement, the Roycroft Inn and Campus.

“Buffalo is home to some of the greatest American architecture of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.” – The New York Times

Check out Buffalo Trolley‘s available tours OR for something a little different try Forgotten Buffalo‘s bus tours of “Old Taverns, cool places, off the beaten path…”

#3.)  Eat a Buffalo Wing at the birthplace of hotwings – Frank & Teressa’s Anchor Bar.  On March 4, 1964 – Teressa Bellissimo created the now world famous appetizer for her son, Dominic, and his friends using  the wing of a chicken and her “secret sauce”.  Although many have tried to duplicate Buffalo Wings, the closely guarded secret recipe is what makes Frank & Teressa’s the proclaimed “Best Wings in the World.”

#4.)  Catch up on your history with a tour of Old Fort Niagara.  The fort changed hands numerous times over its 300 year history and was involved in a handful of battles including the French & Indian War and the War of 1812.  At one point or another the French, British, and American’s held this military installation that controlled the gateway to the Great Lakes.  Tours are available year round.

#5.)  An ultra-cool neighborhood with an organic vibe, the Elmwood Village offers stellar shopping, food, bars, sweets, and boasts an elevated art experience worth seeing. Voted one of the “10 Greatest Neighborhoods in America” by the American Planning Association, the Elmwood Village is one of Buffalo’s best-kept secrets, we encourage you to go exploring!  Visit www.elmwoodvillage.org for more info.
