TAKE A TRIP – BANGOR

December 17, 2013; Posted by: WeBleed staff

Don’t let your bleeding or clotting disorder keep you from experiencing the joys of travel. While precautions and preparations need to be taken for anyone with a chronic health problem – you can still get out there and see all the world has offer. Our “Take a Trip” Series aims to highlight places near and far that you may want to visit. We’ll provide you with local information, ideas for joint-friendly things to do, and access to resources so you can enjoy your time away from home.

Bangor, Maine, USA – Keeping with the New England theme (our last “Take A Trip” destination – which are chosen randomly by the way – was Buffalo), our stop this week is Bangor, Maine.  The locals refer to it as Maine’s “Queen City” because of its beauty, claim its the birthplace of Paul Bunyan,  and writer Stephen King still calls it home.

TOP 5 TRIP TO DOS

#1.)     Visit the 31 foot tall statue of Paul Bunyan in Bass Park.  The statue was donated to Bangor in 1959, on paulbunyanBangor’s 125th anniversary and is thoughtfully set back into the park so that shutterbugs can get all of him into their photos without having to stand in the middle of Main Street

#2.)     SK Tours – (SK = Stephen King)  See Bangor from the perspective of some of the novelists best-loved books.  This 3-hour guided tour highlights nearly 30 spots all over the Bangor & Derry, ME areas where King found inspiration for characters and locales in his writings. www.sk-tours.com

3.)     52 Minutes south of Bangor you’ll find Deer Isle.  A place that harkens back to 1950’s New England, complete with lobster boats.  Beautiful scenery all year round make this idyllic location a destination for artists, photographers, and wildlife enthusiasts.  If you find yourself on Deer Isle on a Friday make sure to stop by the “Seamarket”, an indoor farmers’ market with fresh produce, eggs meat, cheese, coffee, bread and soup. Stock with goodies to take home or have a bite to eat for lunch with friends. Featuring Yellow Birch Farm,Spruce Hill Farm, Tinderhearth Bakery, Organic meat, eggs, Eggemoggin Sea Salt, Soup & more.

4.)     Catch a show at the Bangor Opera House which is owned and operated by the United States’ north-eastern most professional theater company – the Penobscot Theatre Company.  Performing year round in this, their 40th Anniversary Season, the 2013-14 lineup includes shows like “Cinderella: A New Telling of an Old Tale”, “Forever Plaid”, “One Blue Tarp”, “God of Carnage”, and “Our Town”.  Order tickets online here.

5.)     You can’t visit New England, let alone Maine, without sampling some seafood.  For a light-hearted, nautical themed, full-bellied afternoon we suggest visiting Captain Nick’s Seafood & Steak at 1165 Union St in Bangor.
