Finland – Research Shows Iron is Key with Anemia and Menorrhagia patients

June 12, 2014; Posted by: WeBleed staff

Recent study concludes women with anemia and menorrhagia can further their health with iron supplements.

A study done by a obstetrician and gynecology research team in Finland oversaw the treatment of over 230 women who were undergoing treatment for increased heavy menstrual bleeding, also known as menorrhagia, due to hysterectomy or hormone therapy. The study showed the following percentages:

  • 60% of women were iron deficient
  • 27% of women were anemic
  • Only 8% took iron supplements

“Many doctors might think that anemia and iron deficiency will correct once heavy menstrual bleeding is treated,” says Dr. Pirkko Peuranpää from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Hyvinkää Hospital in an article from The Star Online. “Our study shows that the correction of anemia and iron deficiency will actually take a considerable amount of time. The quality of life of women with heavy periods is plural, but the treatment of anemia is important to get good results. Our findings suggest that clinicians should screen for anemia in women with heavy menstrual bleeding and recommend early iron supplementation as part of the treatment process.”

New research suggests the need for iron supplements in women affected by menorrhagia which is termed as periods that last longer than seven days.
