Patients in India Still Awaiting Free Hemophilia Treatment

December 4, 2013; Posted by: webleed staff

The city chapter of Haemophilia Society of India has been trying to make factor replacement available at all government hospitals of the state.

People of Nagpur, India and surrounding cities are still awaiting on a promise made to them years ago. Those suffering from the bleeding disorder hemophilia are waiting to hear if their city’s hospital has been given the okay from the government to get free medical supplies of factor replacement. Only five government centers currently have free factor.

“For the last two years, we have been given many assurances and several promises, but nothing has come out of it. When the facility started in the four cities a year ago, we were hopeful it will begin in other cities, as promised,” Dr Anju Kadu, a consultant pediatrician and executive member of the Haemophilia Society of India, told The Times of India.

India relies on the government to make these important medical decisions for their pharmaceutical needs. With an estimate of over 100,000 living in India with hemophilia, the resident healthcare providers hope a decision is made soon to get the factor and plasma they need.
