Former Olympic Athlete: Fittest Need to be Alert for Clots

Former Olympic runner Vicki Huber Rudawsky warns about the possibility of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in even the most fit athletes.

Do you run, bike or swim often?  Do you feel like you’re in pretty good shape feeling fit? If you answered yes to either one of those questions then you are on the right ‘track’ for living a healthy lifestyle.  However, according to former Olympic runner Vicki Huber Rudawsky (1988, 1996) even the smallest sores or times of pain could potentially be a warning sign for developing a serious blood clot called a DVT.

In a recent Delaware Online article, Rudawsky warns against common leg cramps, leg swelling, dehydration, feeling faint and bruising or tenderness of the leg among many factors that could develop into something worse like a clot.

She also state that “BEING FIT also can increase red blood count, which can affect the thickness of the blood.”

With anything physical, certain health conditions can develop when we least expect them. Thank you Vicki for giving us more signs to look out for in hope of preventing DVT.
