Former San Diego Padre baseball player and Deep Vein Thrombosis spokesperson, Tony Gwynn, passed away at age 54.
Good people come and go in life. The good they do can be measured in how well they treated others and what they did with their time. Tony Gwynn was no exception to that.
On June 16, 2014, Gwynn died due to complications from salivary gland cancer that he had been struggling with since 2010. He was 54 years old.
Tony Gwynn, better known as “Mr. Padre” for his baseball ability to hit almost any ball thrown his way during his career, was also an advocate for the blood clotting disorder Deep Vein Thrombosis. Aside from his gentle and overall nice demeanor, Gwynn was someone who would go out of his way to do something for a family member, friend or fan. In the mid 2000s on, Gwynn began doing Public Service Announcements (PSAs) to bring awareness to a disorder that affects many – Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). Below is a sample video of one PSA he did for DVT in 2005.
DVTs can be deadly if not handled correctly and Gwynn believed in helping people become more aware of DVT through PSAs like these. Thoughts go out to the Gwynn family this week.
