Blood Drive to Be Held Today for Woman With Blood Disorder

American Red Cross blood drive to be held today for woman with Thalassemia.

Thalassemia is a genetic disorder that can cause a person to become anemic and in need of blood transfusions to improve a person’s quality of life.  The American Red Cross holds blood drives for person who experience anemia and bleeding disorders like thalassemia. A blood drive will be held today from  from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Wesley Village Irene Raeder Center in Pittston, Pennsylvania for Kristy DeRome Gombeg according to a release from TimesLeader.com.

“Kristy is always doing stuff for others, so I felt having a blood drive in her honor would be a great way to recognize all she’s done, while following in her footsteps of helping others,” said Amanda Stashak, a friend of Gombeg.

If you live in the Pittston area and want to donate, here are the steps to take to do so according to the article:

  • Donors are asked to call 1-800-RED CROSS or go to redcrossblood.org to make an appointment
  • A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.
  • Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood.
  • High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
