Arizona – Another Blood Transfusion For Young Girl

June 26, 2014; Posted by: WeBleed staff

9 year old Mia McPoland received her 111th blood transfusion yesterday.

A young girl from Phoenix, Arizona is taking things one day at a time.  Same with her blood infusions.  Mia McPoland, a 9 year old with the diagnosis of Diamond-Blackfan anemia, just received her 111th blood transfusion yesterday at Cardon Children’s Medical Center in Mesa.  For those unfamiliar with this type of anemia, Mia depends on others to provide blood for her transfusions every three to four weeks.  Diamond-Blackfan anemia occurs when the body’s bone marrow malfunctions, causing a decreased red blood cell count.  In order to get the oxygen she needs through the blood cells being destroyed, she needs these transfusions. Donors are always need for different donor services and Mia is one of the reasons why.

“If they didn’t donate then I guess I wouldn’t be alive and I wouldn’t be able to do the things I love to do – spending time with my family,” Mia stated in an article via CBS 5 News in Arizona.

As long as Mia continues to receive these blood transfusions, she will be able to live a normal life that any 9 year old should have.
