Family holding a barbecue fundraiser on May 3rd for daughter with ITP.
Shelia Garcia is a young, 7 year old girl who was diagnosed with Idiopathic thrombocyopenic purpura (ITP) last year. ITP is a bleeding disorder in which the immune system destroys platelets and makes it tough for the body’s blood to clot. Her primary doctor ran some blood work and her platelet count was deemed well below the 300,000 it should have been at.
Shelia has missed school and has also had to check in with her family doctor quite a bit since the diagnosis last year. On top of that, “she and her family make trips to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston for blood transfusions, and are working to have her brought under the care of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee according to a report from The Weekly Observer in South Carolina.
In order to help offset some of the family’s constant travel expenses, they are holding a barbecue fundraiser on May 3 in two locations in Hemingway. “Pick-up locations will be at the corner of Andrews and Main Streets from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. and at the Hemingway City Park, also known as the Hemingway Recreation Center, from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. There will be carnival games for children to play”, Shelia’s aunt Joan Hambrick said.
WeBleed wishes Shelia best of luck as she continues her ongoing ITP treatment and success for the fundraiser.
