Rhode Island: Local Man Bikes For Hemophilia

October 8, 2014; Posted by: WeBleed staff

Richard Pezzillo bikes to raise money for hemophilia research and treatment.

A cool story coming out of Rhode Island this morning.  According to The Valley Breeze, a North Providence man who has the rare genetic bleeding disorder hemophilia, Richard Pezzillo, recently completed a 156 mile bike ride in the Hemophilia Federation of America’s (HFA) Gears for Good charity bike ride. This was his second year riding.

“Hemophilia is one of the most expensive chronic conditions to have. As a patient, I’ve seen firsthand the ongoing physical, emotional, and financial challenges a bleeding disorder has on individuals and families,” said Pezzillo, who also suffers from an inhibitor. “Anyone can easily find themselves in temporary financial crisis because of their bleeding disorder. I’m so glad to be part of something that is making a direct impact to patients like me, and to support an organization that has done so much for my community.”

The Rhode Island Hemophilia Treatment Center states there are only about 100 patients in the state with hemophilia.

The funds raised from the 3 day ride support HFA’s Helping Hands program.  To read more about the Helping Hands program click here.
