The Power of Plasma Rich Therapy

The still experimental protein-rich plasma, or PRP, finding surprised success.
Surgeons and athletes use it. It’s a new procedure that is all the talk right now but really, what is a plasma rich therapy?
The main goal of PRP is to reduce the incidence of hematomas and seromas while also acting as a wound sealant. It works by increasing tissue regeneration, collagen, bone density and new blood cells, while decreasing inflammation using the patient’s own blood. Commonly and most recently it is used during orthopedic surgeries and dental procedures with the future holding openings in other specialties.
“We use PRP in all of our procedures, both surgical and nonsurgical such as laser therapy, fat transfers, live fill, skin tightening and even with fillers,” said plastic surgeon Dr. Ross Clevens, who uses PRP as part of treatment with reconstructive and cosmetic patients.
Clevens told TheTownTalk that he finds that PRP can be beneficial on everything from facelift and eyelid surgery to skin cancer reconstructive surgery and rhinoplasty.
There is no telling what will come next for these kinds of therapies – especially in the bleeding disorder community.
