Missouri – Woman Showcased for Bleeding/Clotting Disorders

May 7, 2014; Posted by: WeBleed staff

Amy Harding has been through three miscarriages while suffering from two clotting disorders and one bleeding disorder.

Interesting story coming out of Missouri today as a young couple are being showcased for The Madison County Mom-A-Thon scheduled for this Saturday, May 10 at 10 a.m.  They are being mentioned for a March of Dimes fundraiser to raise awareness for their family history with miscarriages.

“Our first miscarriage was an unexpected pregnancy that was almost over before we even knew it was there. Doctors, friends, and family told us ‘it just wasn’t meant to be,’” Amy Harding told the Daily Journal Online which is based out of Missouri.  Two miscarriages later and both Amy and Jeremy were finally able to figure out what the issue was. Amy was diagnosed with 3 disorders over the course of 10 years that would have prohibited her from successful pregnancies.

The first disorder was a clotting/vitamin disorder called Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase or MTHFR for short.  MTHFR causes cltos between the developing placenta and uterine wall which prevents vital nutrition needed in the developing uterus. The second disorder was another clotting disorder called Anti Phospholipid Syndrome or APS which can appear or reappear. APS blood clots form in the placenta, preventing nutrients and oxygen from getting to the baby.

The last issue was a bleeding disorder.

“I was also diagnosed with low von Willebrand Disease, a bleeding disorder. It affects your blood’s ability to clot. While my type isn’t the severe type it can still cause issues during delivery or if an emergency occurred where bleeding was an issue. The doctor kind of chuckled and told us, ‘You are a rare case, two clotting disorders and a bleeding disorder. I’m going to send you to a Hematologist before we go any further,’” Amy told the Daily Journal Online.

The hope is that knowing more about each disorder will help give Amy and Jeremy the courage they need to try again.
