Louisiana county school board chairman won’t let his recently diagnosed blood disorder stop him from doing his job.
Courageous. Resilient. Never give up attitude.
Fayette County School Board chairman John Price exemplifies all of these virtues. Mr Price has been a board member since 2003 in Fayette County and was recently diagnosed with the rare blood disorder myelodysplastic syndrome.
“This all happened completely unexpectedly,” Price told the Herald-Leader. “I had no symptoms. I went to the doctor for a routine checkup. They did some blood work.”
Like many blood disorders, myelodysplastic syndrome can lead to cancer, in this case leukemia. A way to come to a resolution for the disorder is chemotherapy and an eventual bone marrow biopsy, which he would need someone to donate to him. Mr. Price is still in the process of attaining a donor and scheduling the biopsy.
Through all of this, he is still working and living up to his committment as an elected official.
“I feel a great responsibility to do my job,” Price said. “I think sometimes the public feels that if you have an illness, you are not able to do your job or you are not capable. Right now I think I am able to do my job… in a way that allows me to do what needs to be done.”
