India – Government-Run Hospital Treating Blood Disorders for Free

May 20, 2014; Posted by: WeBleed staff

Hospital in India set to offer free treatment for severe bleeding disorders starting in July.

Great news for the seventh largest metropolis in India today.  Those living with severe genetic blood disorders like hemophilia and thalassemia in the Pune district of India will be eligible for free treatment by a local, government-run hospital starting this July. There are an estimated 800 hemophiliacs in Pune and over 18,000 currently living in India.

“Hemophilia societies of various cities requested us to offer the treatment free of cost. Now they can get anti-hemophilic factor injections and blood transfusions for free, “Dr. Satish Pawar, State Director for Health Services told the Pune Mirror.

The current cost for factor injections in Pune range from 15,000-20,000 rupees per injection and are only given when a patient suffers bleeding, or requires on demand attention.

“Making it free will help each patient financially and improve their quality of life,” added Lilani Jatin Sejpal, a thalassaemia counselor residing in Pune.

Many government agencies around the world put treatments for bleeding disorders to a vote on whether to offer free treatment or not almost every year.  It can be quite an expense for anyone living with a bleeding disorder like hemophilia or thalassemia and now for the residents in Pune, it will offer both physical and economical relief.
