Fundraiser and Bone Marrow Donor Search to save 7 Year Old’s Life

February 21, 2014; posted by: WeBleed staff

Seven year old Californian Mason Morash was diagnosed with aplastic anemia in December of 2013 after he began experiencing problems.

Aplastic anemia is a rare blood disorder in which the body’s bone marrow fails to produce enough new platelets (needed for clotting) and red and white blood cells. It can develop slowly or suddenly (as is the case with Mason) at any age.

With his immune system compromised Mason must live in a controlled environment to ensure that his condition remains as stable as possible while his parents search desperately for a bone marrow match.
“[Mason] has become pretty emotional,” Mason’s mother Corinne told the Village News. “The entire situation has begun to take its toll on him.”

To help find a donor and raise funds to support the Morash family, VFW post 1924 and its Ladies Auxiliary are going to host an Italian dinner that will include stuffed manicotti, Italian sausage, eggplant parmigiana, salad, bread and a desert.

Attendees of the March 1st event, between the age of 18 and 44, will have the opportunity to see if they are eligible to be Mason’s match via a quick and painless mouth swab that will be sent in to a lab for matching.

Webleed.org encourages anyone that can’t attend or is touched by Mason’s story and would like to see if they can be a donor to visit www.bethematch.org or click here to learn the steps on how to become a bone marrow donor.
