Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) can strike anyone with painful clots at any time.
“It’s one of the top three to five leading causes of death in the United States, but because it’s not easily recognized people don’t pick up on it.” This was recently said by Dr. Bud Shuler of the Vascular Association per a news report from News Channel 7 out of Panama City Beach, Florida.
Deep Vein Thrombosis, more commonly known as DVT, is a blood clot that forms in a vein deep in the body usually found in the legs, arms and pelvis. Clots can break loose and travel into blood vessels in the body, causing blockages around major arteries. Most of these clots, if recognized early enough, can be treated and maintained by the person who has developed pain, tenderness, swelling and bruising of the affected areas of the body.
A few quick stats about DVT include:
- Affects 2 million Americans every year.
- Patients in the hospital have up to 900,000 blood clot occurrences each year.
- 60,000-100,000 people die each year from DVT.
- 10 to 30% of people will die within one month of diagnosis.
- Sudden death is the first symptom in about one-quarter (25%) of people who have a PE.
If you or someone you know find that these same causes began happening to you, please consult a medical professional.
