Death Row Inmate Avoids Death Sentence Due To Bleeding Disorder

Russell Bucklew has been on death row since 1997.
Interesting story/video from the Tristate Homepage today. A Missouri man convicted of rape and murder in 1997 has successfully argued he cannot be given the death sentence. Russell Bucklew’s lawyers argued that their client would experience a “prolonged and excrutiating execution” if given the death sentence.
Bucklew suffers from a a rare blood disorder called cavernous hemangioma. This is caused by slow blood flow through the vessels due to large blood tumors. It can also cause eye, brain and liver hemorrhaging.
Having heard this argument, United States Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito granted him a stay of execution – meaning the court order, in this case execution, is temporarily suspended.
