Can Gardasil Cause ITP?

Doctors have been recommending the Gardasil vaccine since 2006 when it was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.  The majority of the medical community say its good for young girls to get the HPV vaccine to help prevent cervical cancer.

Since its approval, the CDC reports that nearly 57 million doses of HPV vaccines were distributed.  Nearly 22k  girls and women reported adverse effects after receiving the vaccination.  The CDC says that 92 percent of those cases were not considered to be serious.

The Mosher family says that their daughter, Kirstie, is part of that 8 percent that has seen serious adverse effects.  When Kirstie received the vaccination she was 12.

“I remember being in the sixth grade and having all of these really bad bruises all over me. So that sparked a lot of concern over me, and I also had all of these weird red dots all over my legs,” said Kirstie told News10.

Shortly after this, Kirstie began to hemorrhage at a nearby park.  The Moshers immediately wen to the hospital where they were told that their daughter had developed an autoimmune disease called idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura (ITP) that causes your immune system to attack your blood platelets.

Kirstie’s doctors won’t come out and say that her ITP was caused by Gardasil, but Russell Mosher, Kirstie’s father still thinks that it played a role.

“I don’t think we have any doubt. Being a biology teacher and knowing a little background about how the body works what’s involved with vaccination, that type of thing I don’t have much reservation to say that we are pretty sure that, that was what ended up causing the ITP.”

“It is safe, most people don’t have a reaction, most people can carry on living normal lives, but for the small percentage, for that 8 percent. I am one of that 8, I’m in there, and it wasn’t safe for me. I mean I am living with a blood condition now for the rest of my life,” said Kirstie.

  • My daughter also developed ITP after receiving just two of the series. We had no idea at the time and only found out years later of the connection. More women need to come forward to get some hard stats on the connection.

  • My oldest daughter was recently diagnosed with ITP, 4 weeks ago to be exact. She had her second gardsil shot in May around that time I started noticing really bad bruising on her legs and arms from the slightest bump.

The drs say they don’t know what causes it but there definitely seems to be a link between the increase in ITP and the gardsil shot to me.
