Cricket Player Develops DVT

Pite van Biljon was flying back to the United Kingdom from his wedding in South Africa.

Blood clots can happen to anyone at any time.  Just ask Pite van Biljon, a cricket player for Kibworth in England, who was recently diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis, most commonly known as DVT.  He traveled over 5,000 miles to play a match after getting in South Africa.

The day he returned to the United Kingdom, he did not feel any different than before and played in a match the next day.  However, a few days following the match he developed intense tightness and stiffness in his right calf.  He decided it was finally time to speak with team doctors and their initial reaction was to shut van Biljon down for the rest of the season due to his inability to fly with the team.  The team has since discussed the option of having him come back to play in a few weeks due to the fact he has responded well to treatment.

“They said it might not be for six months – and I could not fly,” von Biljon told the Leicester Mercury. “My wife was shocked and my parents were very worried because at that stage the news was all bad.”

Ongoing treatment consists of daily injections and warfarin tablets to thin the blood clot and he hopes to continue play next month.
